Hello SOMA West Neighbors:

View the proposals for the new artwork at the SOMA West Skatepark and provide us with your feedback!

Three artists – Michael Arcega, Yoon Lee and Jovi Schnell – have been selected by the SOMA West Skatepark Artist Selection Panel to create proposals for an artwork to be commissioned for the new skatepark at Mission and Duboce. The artists’ proposals and comment forms are available on the Arts Commission website, click here.

We welcome you to provide feedback on the proposals by answering the questions on the website and emailing your responses to Zoe Taleporos, Public Art Program Associate, zoe.taleporos@sfgov.org by Monday, July18, 2011, 10 a.m. PDT.

**A summary of the comments will be shared with the final selection panel before one proposal is chosen for implementation. Please note that the comments do not constitute a vote.

Okay okay here is some fresh news about the long awaited central freeway skatepark.
for one IT IS STILL HAPPENING.
Two. Caltrans had to do a “air quality Assessment” to see if skating there would kill you. there findings… it won’t.
Three ,the planning dept has been reviewing the design and getting it ready for building.
Four, the city has been negotiating a rental price for the space with cal trans, they wanted $11,000.00 a month, the city wants to pay $5,000.00
Five, the city has put a new person in charge of the project. he is cool and wants to get it started soon.

I have hope we will see it finished by summer… or at least started… I’m just the messenger

Central skate park –Yes we are all chomping at the bit… everyone has been asking
when is this park gonna happen? “. Well the wait is over We completed design specs
last year, during the past several months the city has been completing contract
details with the park designer, then we waited until the new fiscal year, July, when
the money was allocated to start the build. Now we are in the process of picking the
builder, which means drafting a request for proposal (RFP) and having a bidding
process. Which includes interviews of builders. With all said we still have about 4
months of prep work and then start the build. Could be 2-4 month build and then
SKATE! what does it all mean. COMPLETION SOMETIME AROUND JAN 2011. Don’t
hold me to it, but let’s hope.

  2. Hello,

Allthough I must say I am happy for the Skating community, I am sad for the families that were in hopes of having a community place to take their families and a place for their little ones and dogs to play. I was one of those who was very excited to have a safe place close to home to take my new little one in our neighborhood to play. At this point we are forced to leave our neighborhood to find other places to play. Allthough, something is better than nothing I guess, as it stands right now the freeway underpass is a place for homelessness and crime to take place fo rthe most part…

    • i understand the need for a place for kids to play. it is unfortunate that young kids cant play under the freeway due to air quality assesment. there will be a dog run installed behind the zietgiest and parking for the city that pays for the rental from caltrans. we are glad that the nieghborhood has supported skateboarding and we kn ow it will be a successful park.
